Kachiyappa Sivachariar · Chapter 1 / 4

The author and the Tamil sacred narrative

The Tamil Kanda Puranam is associated with Kachiyappa Sivachariar and the devotional world of Kanchipuram’s Kumarakottam. Its stories and praises have an important place in Tamil accounts of Murugan. Reading it as a particular literary work helps preserve its distinctive voice.
The broad name Skanda Purana covers other textual histories and traditions. A story found in one source should therefore be identified by that source, rather than presented as the single wording shared by every account. Differences can be explained respectfully without treating the living traditions as interchangeable.
