Kumaraguruparar · Chapter 1 / 4

Poet, scholar and devotional traveller

Kumaraguruparar belongs to the seventeenth-century Tamil Shaiva tradition. Biographical references connect him with Srivaikuntam, Tiruchendur, the monastic learning of Dharmapuram and a later life associated with Kashi. His surviving works show a writer able to move between devotional praise, learning and different literary forms.
His childhood connection with Tiruchendur is remembered through the story of receiving speech by Murugan’s grace. That story is meaningful within the tradition and should be introduced as such. His poems can be studied as literature while the miraculous account retains its own, clearly named place in his devotional biography.
