Kumaraguruparar · Chapter 4 / 4

Two different ways of approaching Murugan

Kandar Kalivenpa offers one reading path; Muthukkumaraswami Pillaitamil offers another. Pillaitamil imaginatively celebrates a deity or honoured figure through stages and scenes of childhood. The form gives affection and literary craft room to work together.
A useful reading sequence begins with a short passage from each work. Notice how the voice changes: what is being praised, how the deity is addressed and what kind of relationship the poem creates. The difference helps a reader discover that devotion has many literary moods, even within one author’s writing.
